Hashtag

A hash sign (#) that is followed by a word or phrase on social media sites such as Twitter identifying messages according to a specific topic, theme, or content. The term and idea has spread to various domains of pop culture. For example, rapper Kanye West introduced the term “hashtag rap” to refer to a style of rap that has the elements of a typical hashtag—a metaphorical phrase, a punch line, and a pause. Other musicians have made this style somewhat popular, including Nicki Minaj and Drake, while others, such as Ludacris, have critiqued it for being too abrupt and against the basic philosophy of rap. Hashtags have also been used for social and political activism. Well-known examples include #yesallwomen and #notallmen to debate misogyny and changing gender roles.
